This prayer for animals was written by Albert Schweitzer
Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends the animals,
especially for animals who are suffering; for any
that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry;
for all that must be put to sleep.
We entreat for them all
Thy mercy and pity, and for those who deal with them
we ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words.
Make us be true friends to animals
and so to share the blessings of the merciful.
Almighty and generous God
how great the variety of living things,
You have put at our disposal!
You told our first parents:
“I give you all the animals of the land.”
Some can be used as food,
or for labor or transportation,
but also for our companionship and recreation.
Bless this animal.
May it carry out the function it has been given
and may it aid us to think of You its Creator
and give praise and thanks to You forever.
We ask this in the name of Jesus our Lord.
(New St. Joseph People's Prayer Book)
Dear Jesus, teach me to be kind and gentle towards all animals.
May l always take care of and provide for my animal
and never ill-treat any living creature
that You have placed upon this earth. Amen.
Dear Jesus, I was fortunate to have the companionship of (pet name).
Now that he (she) has left this life,
please help me to cope with my loss with strength and courage.
I know that my beloved companion no longer suffers,
and will live on in many fond memories.
As he (she) has enriched my life,
I pray that I may enrich the lives of others. Amen.
